MARCO CORDERO | EXHIBITION CATALOGUE UNA PIETRA SOPRA
Marco Cordero (Roccavione, 1969) lives and works primarily in Turin. Since the late 1990s, his research has focused on the possible and impossible narratives that humans construct to share their relationships with architectural, natural, and spiritual space. Books, in all their forms, have become the most common material for his work.
The volume accompanies the exhibition Una Pietra Sopra (A Stone Above) (Nuova Galleria Morone, September 19–November 9, 2024), a profound exploration of the intersections between sculpture, text, and memory. The central element of Marco Cordero's sculptures is a book, a real book, which the artist appropriates but reworks: hollowed out, burned, stripped of its function as a book. In this exhibition, Marco Cordero links the fate of his books to rock, stone, and marble. This combination gives rise to surprising hybrids: books as rocks, or rocks as books. The catalogue published for Marco Cordero's solo exhibition is not simply an accompaniment to the exhibition, but reflects the conceptual depth and meticulous attention to detail that characterize the artist's work.
The cover, with its title carved into the surface, recalls Cordero's artistic gesture, his sculpting of books, bringing out words and phrases. Every technical and graphic choice in this catalog is intended to reflect the author's artistic universe: from A structure reminiscent of classic novels, with words highlighted in red—just as the exposed binding thread is red—matching the chromatic detail of the work "Una Pietra Sopra," the exhibition's centerpiece. The simple yet evocative editorial design lends itself as a framework for the critical essays and the interview conducted by Paul Ardenne, which explores intimate and previously unseen aspects of Cordero's artistic journey. The questions raise crucial questions about the nature of his work, providing the reader with a means to further delve into the artist's thinking.
